  • Founding Conference of the Association of National Committee of the Blue Shield (ANCBS). The event will be held in The Hague (Netherlands) on the 7th, 8th and 9th of December 2008 and some most representative members of the Blue Shield and other international organizations will convene at the conference. As this is the Founding Conference, the Organisers will welcome to the event representatives of many like-minded or related organizations. Objectives are strengthening the network between Blue Shield and other cultural emergency assistance organizations, institutions and authorities; presentation ANCBS 's plans for the coming years and recent emergency situation and emergency response actions otherwise improve the knowledge of the conference participants about this with training courses and workshops. This will be an important step in the effort to provide organized help to endangered cultural heritage worldwide. The plan to form an Association of National Committees of the Blue Shield was discussed at the first Blue Shield meeting in Torino 2004. At the second meeting in The Hague 2006 an international working group was elected which has since made preparations for the new association. The working group approached the City of The Hague, which has generously provided office space and three years of financial support to establish an ANCBS coordination centre in The Hague.   • The Archaeological Institute of America, the Lawyers’ Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation, and the U.S. Committee for the Blue Shield announce that the United States Senate voted on September 25 to give its advice and consent to ratification of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.   • WATCH being affiliated to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The Executive Council of the UNWTO in Jeju (Republic of Corea) approved WATCH application as an affiliated member on June the 13-14th, 2008. Final ratification of the decision should be taken by UNWTO General Assembly due in Kazakhstan in October 2009. The World Association for the Protection of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage in times of armed conflicts continues its efforts to establish proactive cooperation at an international level to promote agreed upon policies for the protection of Cultural Heritage during times of armed conflcit.
